Oil on copper pipe, copper mesh, and canvas
Bertel Thorvaldsen’s 1833 Christus is a mass-produced symbol within Mormonism. Here, the Christus is framed in copper pipe, reaching for the downcast face of a young woman painted on copper mesh in a nod to the Salt Lake-based Kennecott Copper Mine where the artist’s father worked for eleven years. The work examines institutional extraction from Mountain West land and people to reflect on broader issues regarding religiosity, capitalism, quality of life, and the American Dream.
